Discover the Magic of the Maui Butterfly Farm Tour

The Maui Butterfly Farm offers a unique and enchanting experience that immerses you in the delicate world of butterflies on the beautiful island of Maui.

This magical tour is one of the most rewarding and educational activities for families, nature lovers, and anyone seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure in paradise.

Located on the west side of Maui in Olowalu, the Maui Butterfly Farm is the only butterfly farm in Hawaii that offers guided tours to the public.

What Makes the Maui Butterfly Farm So Special?

Unlike a simple butterfly exhibit, the Maui Butterfly Farm is a living, breathing educational center focused on the conservation and propagation of native Hawaiian butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.

The tour begins with an introduction to the life cycle of butterflies, from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to adult. Visitors get a hands-on experience observing and even interacting with these delicate creatures as they flutter around the enclosed garden.

What sets the Maui Butterfly Farm apart is its emphasis on sustainability and environmental education. Guests learn about the critical role butterflies play in the ecosystem and how their presence contributes to the health of Maui’s native flora.

The farm also works with schools and local organizations to raise awareness about protecting pollinators.

Where Is It and How to Get There

The Maui Butterfly Farm is conveniently located right off Honoapiilani Highway in Olowalu, making it a perfect stop on a scenic West Maui drive. Just 10 minutes south of Lahaina, it’s easy to reach by car and includes free parking for visitors.

The area around the farm is filled with panoramic ocean views, historic sites, and nearby food trucks, so you can make a half-day adventure of your visit.

What to Expect on the Tour

The tour at the Maui Butterfly Farm lasts approximately 45 minutes and is led by passionate guides who are experts in entomology and native Hawaiian species.

You’ll begin in a covered outdoor education area where guides explain the mission of the farm and introduce you to various butterfly species, including the native Kamehameha butterfly.

Then, you’ll step into the butterfly enclosure—a lush garden filled with tropical plants and flowers designed to attract and sustain butterflies. Here, you’ll see butterflies in every stage of life, and you might even have one land on your shoulder.

Guests are encouraged to take photos and ask questions, making this a deeply personal and engaging experience.

Perfect for All Ages

The Maui Butterfly Farm is suitable for children, adults, and seniors alike. It’s a flat, accessible venue with shaded areas, making it comfortable even on warmer days.

Children especially love the opportunity to witness butterflies up close and personal—many call it their favorite part of the trip. Parents appreciate the educational value and the chance to take a break from more crowded tourist activities.
