Age, license, requirements

What is the minimum age requirement to rent a car?
Renters must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid driver's license, as well as a current auto insurance policy.
Is there a fee for underaged drivers under 25 years old?
No, there is no underage fee when you rent from us. 21 and older pays the same. All you need to show upon booking is proof of insurance, a valid driver's license, and pay for your rental with a credit card.
Do you accept drivers with an international driver's license?
We sure do, as long as your license is valid and in English. If you do not have travel insurance, a valid policy in the US, or coverage from your credit card company, you'll need to purchase a CDW from us.
Can I talk to a real person over the phone before I book?
You sure can! For reservation and booking questions, call Sandy directly at (808) 866-0286, or call our main line at (808) 757-7747 and press 1.
Can I contact Makoa Rental Car via WhatsApp?
Yes! The number is +1 (808) 268-3657.
Do you have a minimum days requirement for a booking?
No, we do not have a minimum rental period requirement.
Can you accommodate long term rentals & do you offer a long-term discount?
Absolutely — we're a great choice for long term car rental on Maui. Our long term discount automatically applies when booking online. The longer the duration, the more you save.

Booking & changes

Drivers, cancellations

How do I make changes to my existing reservation?
You can make changes to your reservation via email. Just reply to your reservation confirmation email with your changes and we'll take care of it. Note that we can only honor changes we've approved.
How do I add authorized drivers to my reservation?
To add drivers to your reservation, use the Add Driver link on our site.
What is your cancellation policy?
We do not charge for cancellations outside of 5 days from your arrival. Within the 5-day window, the cancellation fee is 30% of your reservation total before tax. For example, a $1,000 reservation canceled within 5 days carries a $300 fee.
How do I cancel my reservation?
Use the Cancel Reservation link on our site.
Do you charge a deposit and is my rental car guaranteed?
We do not charge a deposit upon booking, and your rental car is guaranteed. Cancellation is free up to 5 days prior to arrival, and 30% of your reservation total within that window.

Pricing, fees & payment

Taxes, fuel, cards

Is there a charge for miles?
No. Free unlimited miles.
What taxes and fees am I paying in addition to my rental rate?
Taxes: The State of Hawaii imposes a $7/day surcharge on rental vehicles, plus GET tax (sales tax) of 4.50% on the total rental cost.

Fees: A parking fee of up to $24 applies to exit the Kahului Airport lot for all airport pickups, and the same $24 fee applies for after-hours returns. No deposit is required, and cancellation is free up to 5 days prior to arrival — the cancellation fee is 30% of your reservation total.
What is the fee for returning a rental with less than a full tank of fuel?
A $15 recovery fee will be added to the total for any gas missing on returns with less than a full tank.
Do I need to clean the car prior to dropping it off?
Yes, to the best of your ability — please make sure your rental car is not excessively dirty to avoid cleaning fees.
Do you require a credit card to rent a car?
Yes, we accept all major credit cards. Paying with a credit card also gives you extra insurance from your credit card company.
Do you accept debit cards or cash payments?
Yes, we accept debit cards as long as you can provide proof of insurance with a valid auto policy in your name. We accept cash payment as well, although we need a credit card on file and proof of a valid auto insurance policy.
Will I be reimbursed for the $24 airport parking fee?
The up to $24 fee required at the Airport parking lot exit is the renter's responsibility and is not refundable.

Pickup & drop-off

Airport, after-hours

If my flight is delayed and I arrive late at night, can I still pick up my rental car after hours?
Yes. You can pick up your rental car from OGG-Kahului airport anytime, day or night, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you arrive late, your rental car will still be waiting for you at the airport parking lot.
Where do I pick up my rental car once I arrive at the Maui Kahului Airport?
Check your phone for our pickup & return instructions page link. After picking up your luggage, cross the road outside baggage claim, past the "Train House," straight into the airport parking lot. Follow the simple instructions on your pickup page, which include a map and photos of your rental.
Where do I drop off my rental car at the end of my trip?
Unless directed otherwise, return your car to the same airport parking lot you picked it up from. Park and follow the return instructions sent via email and text. Remember to fuel up prior to return to avoid the $15 fuel recovery fee, and clean up the car to the best of your ability to avoid the excessive cleaning fee of up to $150. Smoking inside the vehicle carries a $250 penalty.

Unless an extension was discussed and approved by our office, late returns are subject to a $100 late fee plus an hourly rate of $15/hour, up to the current daily rate.

Insurance & coverage

Liability, full coverage

What kind of insurance do I get with my rental car?
Our commercial liability insurance policy meets the minimum requirements of the State of Hawaii — it covers bodily injuries only and does not cover vehicle or property damage. You can add an insurance policy from us, with options ranging from rental car full coverage to complete A-Z coverage.
Can I still rent a car even if I do not have a personal auto insurance policy?
Yes! If you're an international traveler or don't have an active auto insurance policy in the US or Canada, you're required to add our "Full Coverage & Liability" policy to your reservation. If you live in the US or Canada without an active, valid policy, you're required to purchase this as well.
Can I get full coverage on my rental vehicle?
You sure can, by adding an insurance policy from us. We offer a variety of options, from rental car Full Coverage with a $2,000 deductible, to complete A-Z coverage with a $0 deductible.

During your trip

Car seats, Road to Hana

Do you offer safety car seats or booster seats? What is the law in Hawai'i?
Yes. We offer top-of-the-line rental baby seats and boosters, all clean and in fairly new condition. Hawaii law requires children under age 4 to ride in a child safety seat, and children ages 4 through 7 to ride in a child safety seat or booster seat. The driver is responsible for compliance with the law.
Am I allowed to drive on the Road to Hana?
Yes, you can drive on the Road to Hana (Hana Hwy). You're allowed to drive all the way to the Seven Sacred Pools (O'heo Gulch) in the Kipahulu District of Haleakalā National Park and drive back the same way. Continuing past that point on the back road makes the renter responsible for any vehicle damage: flat tire pickup fees of $300–$500, a $1,000 tow fee, and $500–$700 for rim/tire damage.
What should I do if I get a flat tire?
If your tire is just low on air, come by our shop or visit most gas stations — they have an air pump. If the tire is fully flat, call us at (808) 757-7747 and press 2, and we will get you back on the road quickly.
What if my rental car's battery dies?
Try to find a jump and come by our shop for a battery test, or call us at (808) 757-7747 and press 2. We'll walk you through a quick check over the phone and send help if replacement is needed.

Damages, accidents & roadside support

Accidents, flat tire, keys

What is the procedure in the event of an accident?
First, make sure everybody is okay, then call 911 and file a police report. Collect insurance and driver's license information from the other party involved. Then notify us of the situation and we'll respond accordingly.
What do I do in case of an emergency such as a flat tire, dead battery, lost key, or mechanical issue?
Call our main line at (808) 757-7747 and press 2 to reach our fleet manager right away. For questions about your booking or reservation instead, press 1 for Sandy, or call her direct line at (808) 866-0286.
What happens if I damage the rental vehicle?
Minor damage is handled directly with our office. Larger claims are managed through our insurance partner to make the process as smooth as possible.
What if I lose my rental car key?
Call us immediately so we can get you a replacement key or arrange access to another vehicle. Replacement cost depends on the key type — our team will walk you through it on the call.
