This stunning natural phenomenon draws visitors from around the world who come to marvel at its beauty and power. In this article, we’ll explore everything you need to know about Nakalele Blowhole, from its geological wonders to practical tips for visiting, including the best way to access it with an SUV rental deluxe from Maui.
What is Nakalele Blowhole?
Nakalele Blowhole is one of Maui’s most dramatic natural attractions. The blowhole is the result of ocean waves forcing water through a submerged tunnel in the lava shelf. The pressure builds until it explodes upwards, creating a spectacular display of nature’s power. The height of the water spout can vary dramatically depending on the tide and the swell, sometimes reaching up to 100 feet into the air.
The Science Behind the Spray
The Nakalele Blowhole occurs due to the combination of tide and wave action against a series of lava tubes formed by ancient volcanic activity. As waves crash into the rocky shoreline, water is forced through these tubes, building pressure until it erupts skyward, offering a breathtaking natural display.
